Security Tips for Students:   Laptops Be diligent and aware of where your laptop is at all times. If a thief sees a laptop sitting unsecured on a desk, next to one that is being secured with a laptop cable kit, which do you think they will take? Secure your laptop at night and on weekends.  The campus environment is more open than others and thieves can be pretty sure there are a good number of laptops to be had.   Choose an inconspicuous carrying case.  A bag that is the size and shape of a laptop is a pretty good clue that there's a laptop inside.  An appropriately padded school bag or backpack will do just as good a job of physically protecting the laptop.   Consider purchasing a lock for your backpack. Label and tag the laptop and all accessories.  Make sure that everything that can be labeled is labeled with the name of the individual or organization that owns it.   Also consider the STOP Security plate.  STOP plates, and the permanent tattoo they leave on your equipment, act as a highly effective theft-deterrent by providing unmistakable proof that equipment is police traceable and/or stolen. Resale of stolen items marked with our system is virtually impossible. Result? Equipment that would have "disappeared" before is returned, not resold. Residence Hall Lock all doors, even if you are leaving only for a short time Make certain to lock your door before you go to sleep Never prop open any locking residence hall door. Avoid leaving notes on your door saying that you are out. If you door has a deadbolt lock, USE IT!  Some of the recent thefts on campus were possible because there wasn't a deadbolt on the door or it wasn't used. In addition to locking your door, put your laptop in a drawer, preferably a locked drawer. Bicycle Safety Tips: ALWAYS lock your wheel and frame to a bicycle rack or other permanent fixture (e.g., a street light pole, a tree..) The number one thing that you can do to protect your bicycle from theft is to LOCK IT UP.  Bringing it inside or just leaving it for a minute while you run inside is likely to cost you your bicycle.
